Cities around the world show support for Paris

Trine Jensen-Burke

Cities around the world are turning landmark buildings and large events red, white and blue in a touching tribute to Paris, who last night came under siege from terrirosts, leaving more than 150 people dead and many more injured.

Our own Convention Centre in the Dublin Docklands lit up in the French colours last night to show our solidarity with Paris and the French people, and many more building around the world have followed suit.

Images quickly surfaced on Twitter of the Wembley Stadium in England and One World Trade Center in New York showing the blue, white and red flag of France, followed by the Empire State Building and Sydney’s famous Opra House.

By the end of the night, landmarks from around the globe were paying similar tribute.

The tributes followed statements from world leaders, including President Barack Obama, who on Friday evening condemned the attacks, and pledged support for the people of France. “This is an attack not just on Paris, it is an attack not just on the people of France, but an attack on all of humanity  and the universal values we share.”

Our own leaders followed suit, with President Michael D. Higgins saying: “I have been shocked to learn of and view the images of the terrible events in unfolding in Paris this evening.”

Enda Kenny took to Twitter to express his condolances, writing: “This is a shocking attack on humanity. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
