Conjoined twins born to an Indonesian couple will undergo landmark surgery to separate them, doctors have confirmed.

Nadira Alifa Putri and Nadiba Aisyah Putri are two of triplets who arrived by Caesarean section in January, shocking doctors at Tanjungpinang Regional General Hospital.

While the sisters share a skull, they have separate brains and, according to their parents, very different personalities.

Mum Siti Nuryaningsih and dad Juarnes Prana Dinata, both 30, are hoping the delicate operation will allow their daughters to lead a normal life.

Siti revealed: ‘When one sleeps the other one wants to play so their sense of doing things is really messed up. ‘We are really looking forward to their separation.’

Doctors at Jakarta’s Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital are waiting until the girls’ weight reaches 22lbs before they can consider the major surgery, but they hope to separate the girls within the next eight months.
