Dad Gets Surprise Surgery While Wife’s In Labour

Sophie White

Reported in the Telegraph last week, a nervy new dad got an unexpected surprise as he waited on the birth of his baby – hemorrhoid surgery.

Mr. Wang was reportedly mistaken for another patient as he waited outside a hospital ward in the Shenyang Hunnan Xinqu Hospital, China.

Reports in the Bandao City News state that the father-to-be was mistaken for another patient who had already completed hospital forms to undergo the painful surgery.

When doctors approached him in the corridor and asked him to come with them, Mr. Wang believed he was being taken to assist at his wife’s labour.

He told the newspaper:

“They said: ‘Just do what we tell you’.”

What they told him to do was drop his pants and get up on an operating table.

“It felt strange, and I asked why?” said Mr. Wang though incredibly he apparently didn’t put up much of a fight as doctors then anesthetised him before removing the hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids the unwitting patient didn’t even know he had.

“I really never knew I had hemorrhoids,” said Mr. Wang.

According to another report in the Chinese Business Morning View, the 29-year-old dad heard his baby crying from the operating table.

“But I couldn’t move because I started to feel pain,” he said.

The mix-up occurred last week, and Mr. Wang has since been offered the equivalent of about €670 in compensation, though the hospital spokesperson didn’t exactly sound contrite about the matter saying that the error “should be shouldered by both parties since Mr. Wang is a grown up man”.

Mr. Wang’s healthy baby was delivered by c-section. We wouldn’t want to be that mama this week, trying to care for a newborn and recover from major abdominal surgery with an ailing man in the house.
