The touching meaning behind Deborah James’ funeral song

Kat O'Connor

Dame Deborah James was laid to rest in London this week.

Dame Deborah James chose quite a poignant song for her funeral. A source close to the mum-of-two revealed that Tell Me It’s Not True from the musical Blood Brothers played during her funeral service.

It is believed jazz singer Natalie Rushdie performed the song at Deborah’s funeral.

Deborah was laid to rest on Wednesday, July 20th.

There’s no doubt the moving lyrics had churchgoers in floods of tears.

Tell me it’s not true/ Say I only dreamed it/And morning will come soon.”

Deborah’s husband Sebastian and their two children, Hugo (14) and Eloise (12) attended the heartbreaking service yesterday.

Lorraine Kelly, Tom, and Giovanna Fletcher and Gaby Roslin also attended her funeral.

Mourners dressed in black for the service at St. Mary’s Church in Barnes, west London.

Before her passing, Deborah told The Sunday Times that she wanted to have a somber church service.

She also said she wanted to be cremated.

Deborah’s loved ones walked behind a vintage Rolls-Royce hearse before the service.

Her husband Sebastian and son Hugo carried her wicker coffin into the church with other family members.

Deborah’s husband delivered her eulogy. Her children also read poems during the harrowing service.

The podcaster’s death was announced on June 28th.

Alongside a beautiful photo of Deborah smiling on her holidays, her family confirmed she had sadly passed away.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Dame Deborah James; the most amazing wife, daughter, sister, mummy. Deborah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her family.”

Before her death, Deborah shared advice with her followers.

“Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope.

“And finally, check your poo – it could just save your life.”
