Ed Sheeran shook up some Donegal kids’ school day.

While we all know the singer loves Ireland, just listen to his song Galway Girl, he took things a step further with his latest music video.

Ed launched a competition several months ago when asked schools around the world to create a video to accompany a song of their choice from his latest album, Autumn Variations.

Fourteen schools from around the globe were selected as winners and each one’s music video was picked to go with a tune from the record.

One of those lucky few were the transition year students from Finn Valley College, Stranorlar, Donegal.

The video officially dropped today, with the British singer describing it as “a school love story with a Romeo and Juliet twist.”

One of the teachers from the school, Tina Garry, joined Newstalk Breakfast to explain how it all came about.

“We jumped at the chance and sent them an email, but didn’t expect to hear anything back from it,” Ms Garry said.

“My colleague then began receiving correspondence from Warner Bros [Sheeran’s record label] looking for more information. With our TY class having a bit of flexibility in their programme we thought it was an ideal project for them.”

From here she and her class started to work on the project together, organising shots and the story they wanted to tell.

“We set about planning shots and devising a concept, coming up with a Romeo and Juliet idea, and we sent them a pitch,” she said.

“Again, we thought nothing of it, but they [Warner Bros] kept coming back to us looking for more details. They were wondering how we could cast the film and what props we would use.

“We were given the name of the song [called Magical] in advance so we were trying to fit something to this ballad narrative.”
