It's the little things that bring us joy these days. Our indoor house plants living longer than expected, the promise of vaccinations on the horizon, and, of course, fictionalised versions of royal families that we'll never meet. In keeping with the spirit of joy, we can confirm that the next season of The Crown will officially start filming in July.
According to
Variety, the show's producers confirmed that the show will start filming in July under strict Covid protocols and with a brand new cast. Season 5 will feature a slew of new faces taking on the iconic royals, with “Tenet” star Elizabeth Debicki starring as Princess Diana; Dominic West portraying Prince Charles; Imelda Staunton playing the Queen; and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.
The majority of the show is filmed at Elstree Studios just north of London, and it's hoped that by the time of filming in July, the UK will be well on its way to recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. The country will begin to ease restrictions from April 12 following a third national lockdown that was put in place in January.
Despite the numerous lockdowns, film and tv productions have been continuing throughout the pandemic. Season 4 of The Crown, which was released to much fanfare in November, certainly reignited mass interest in the Peter Morgan-created series as it swept the Golden Globes and SAG Awards this season.
The last season focused largely on Princess Diana (played to perfection by Emma Corrin) and the early days of her marriage, but in the upcoming season, we'll be treated to the tumultuous nineties.
The nineties were considered a massively turbulent time for the royals, with scandal after scandal landing at the palace doors. Despite the excitement, there is also a bittersweetness to the news as we know this group of actors will be the last.
The beloved show is set to end after season 6.
