Usher's son, Usher V, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just 6 years of age.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system destroys insulin producing cells in the body.
People diagnosed with the condition require daily insulin injections to manage blood sugar levels.
Usher spoke to Parents magazine about the reality of family life and how the diagnosis impacts them.
"This wasn't something that could be easily remedied - it was a lifestyle; it was a life change," he said.
His son, now 16, grew up at a very early age, according to the singer.
"You would never think that a six-year-old would have to all of a sudden be conscious of what they are," he mused.
Type 1 Diabetes is a huge responsibility, and people that live with it must go into every day prepared.
He continued, saying how hard it was knowing his son would not have the same freedom as other children. While they could easily go to a sleepover last minute or eat too much sugar, his son couldn't do the same.
"If my child ever wanted to go on a trip or do the normal things that kids do to be social, I'm always thinking about it. It's always lingering in the back of my mind."
