Families and market lovers saddened as Fusion Sundays closes

Melissa Carton

Many regulars of the popular weekend market are heartbroken that it will close for the foreseeable future this Sunday.

Fusion Sunday has been running from Newmarket Square for the last six years but due to the area being redeveloped it will be closing up shop this weekend for the last time.

Many Dublin locals have made the markets their weekly ritual and can’t believe they are losing a vital part of their community.

Having frequented the Fusion Sundays many times with my own family, I’ll feel a little lost without it. The markets were such a great thing to pop down to at the weekend, with their myriad of food, clothing and book stalls.

The markets were also home to the community share library where people could lend out household items to others living in the area.

As well as a great spot for shopping, Fusion Sundays exhibited dance and performances from different countries and brought together all different cultures.

Many of the markets seem to be relocating to Bluebell, which will be great for those living nearby, but for those in the Liberties, it’s the end of an era.

The closure of the markets is just another part of an ongoing struggle between locals and the regeneration of the area. There have already been protests at Kevin Street where a hotel is being built in a residential area.

For the markets of Newmarket though, the battle is over as the area sees a new chapter in its life.
