Finance Minister confirms there will be no more energy credits in future budgets

If you’ve been counting on those handy electricity credits in the budget each year, it looks like that’s coming to an end.

Finance Minister, Jack Chambers has confirmed that energy credits won’t be part of future budgets, as the government shifts its approach to tackling rising electricity costs.

For the past few years, households have been receiving these credits as part of the budget announcement.

Budget 2025 rolled out two final credits of €125 each, with one landing between November and December 2024 and the other between January and February 2025.

But after that, don’t expect them to return.

Speaking to The Irish Sun, Minister Chambers explained that the government is moving away from “one-off temporary measures” like these.

Instead, they’re looking at other ways to support families, such as increasing social welfare payments and introducing tax cuts.

He also pointed out that investments in the energy system under the National Development Plan will help manage rising costs in the long term.

If you’re wondering when your 2025 credit will appear on your bill, it depends on your electricity provider’s billing cycle.

Most people should see the payments automatically applied, but if you don’t, you have until May 31, 2025, to raise an issue with your supplier.

If that doesn’t resolve it, the CRU’s Customer Care Team can step in to help.

So, while the days of automatic energy credits may be numbered, the government insists other supports are on the way.
