Gardaí appeal for witnesses after woman found dead following “suspected assault” in Laois

Gardaí are currently appealing for witnesses in Laois after a woman was found dead on Wednesday following a suspected assault.

Officers are now investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident which led to the death of a woman in her 30s.

Investigators said that the woman was discovered with serious injuries at around 4.45pm on Wednesday at a home in Mountmellick and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination is set to be carried out today and the results will determine the course of the investigation.

A man in his 30s has now been arrested as part of the investigation and is being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station.

The body of the woman remains at the scene which is being preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of a suspected fatal assault on a woman that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, 14th December 2022, in County Laois.

“The woman, aged in her 30s, was discovered with serious injuries at approximately 4:45pm at a residence in Mountmellick, County Laois.

“She was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the State Pathologist have been notified. A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Thursday, 15th December 2022, the results of which will determine the course of this investigation.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested as part of this investigation and he is currently being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

“The woman’s body remains at the scene which is currently preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.”

“Investigations are ongoing. An Garda Síochána has no further information available at this time.”
