Gardaí In Maynooth Step Up Patrols As Attacker Remains At Large

Extra Gardaí have arrived in Maynooth to join the hunt for a vicious attacker who violently assaulted a young woman there on Sunday night. 

Kym Owens, a Bachelor of Arts student from Castleblayney in Co Monaghan remains in “serious” but stable condition in the intensive care unit of Blanchardstown Hospital in Dublin today, where she is being treated for injuries that include broken eye sockets, a broken nose and a broken jaw.

The 18-year-old university student lost several teeth in the attack, which occurred at approximately 8.30pm after she got off a bus near her digs in the Moyglare Abbey, Co. Kildare. She was discovered lying unconscious on a footpath and received medical assistance at the scene before emergency services arrived.

As well as drafting in more Gardaí to step up patrols and join the search for the attacker, Gardaí have issued a renewed appeal for information.

A Garda statement said:

“Kym travelled on a private bus, belonging to the A2B Bus Company, from Monaghan to Maynooth on Sunday night and got off the bus in Maynooth at approximately 8.15p.m. Kym was wearing a long dark green coat with a hood, black jeans, a red hoody and white converse runners. She was carrying a sports bag, green in colour with ‘Castleblaney Faughs’ on the side.”

Gardai are appealing in particular to any person on the bus. any person in the vicinity of Maynooth Village/Moyglare Abbey Estate between 7pm and 9pm on Sunday night or any person who noticed anything unusual, in particular any person with staining on their clothes or perhaps in an agitated state, to contact them at Leixlip Garda Station on 01 6667800, The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any Garda station.
