Gardaí ‘Very Worried’ for Mother of Tragic Newborn Found at Waste Facility

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Gardaí have appealed to the mother of a dead baby girl found at a Wicklow recycling centre yesterday to come forward.

The full-term infant, which may have been stillborn, was discovered among recyclable material by an employee of the Greenstar facility in Fassaroe near Bray.

It is believed the waste that was being sorted at the time may have originated in north Dublin or Limerick and enquiries are ongoing as detectives attempt to figure out where it came from. In the meantime the newborn’s remains have been removed to Loughlinstown Hospital, where a postmortem will take place tomorrow.

Speaking at last night’s media briefing, Superintendent Pat Ward said: “Our main focus this evening is on the mum of the baby girl. We’re very, very concerned for the health and well-being of mum.

“Mum can be assured that if she contacts us, we will be as caring as we possibly can be to her and will provide as much support as possible.”

He added. “We don’t know what exactly happened leading up to the birth of the baby. However, it is possible that the baby was stillborn and if this is the case my priority now is to get all medical assistance and support to the baby’s mum.”

It is almost one year since a baby girl was found abandoned on a Dublin lay-by. Baby Maria had been wrapped in a plastic bag and left near a business on the Steelstown Road in Rathcoole. She was rushed to the Coombe hospital and returned to health before being placed with a loving foster family.

Investigating officers made numerous appeals for the child’s mother to come forward, even putting a number of items found near her, including a blanket, a black bag and a towel, on display in the hope they may jog somebody’s memory. There are no leads in tracing the woman.

Anyone with any information on the body of the baby discovered at the recycling facility is asked to contact Bray garda station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
