Glenda Gilson claims wolf-whistling is a “compliment”

Kat O'Connor

” I think you could take it as a compliment.”

Glenda Gilson has claimed wolf-whistling is “a compliment” and believes people need to take it less seriously.

The mum was speaking about wolf-whistling on Newstalk this afternoon, but her views have been hit with backlash.

She admitted, “I don’t think it’s offensive at all.”

She told the radio station that it isn’t a big deal, especially “in a big, oul bad world that we live in right now. I also don’t think it should be taken too seriously.”

Glenda said men used to wolf-whistle at her when she was younger, but it doesn’t happen as often now.

She explained that it would happen “when you were around town and probably dolled up”.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing, I think you could take it as a compliment,” she claimed.

“Don’t take it too seriously; a whistle’s a whistle, someone’s paying you a compliment.”

Glenda said Irish women struggle to accept compliments, but we shouldn’t be “mortified” by wolf-whistling.

“It can be mortifying walking by a load of builders hanging out the side of a building, they give you a wolf-whistle and you’re just afraid that your heel might break or your skirt might blow up, it’s kind of a mortifying thing, but it’s not such a bad thing”.

“There’s so much bad in this world, and I think an oul wolf-whistle is the least of our worries”.

Many believe her views are incredibly dated.

One person said, “It makes them feel uncomfortable. They feel they are being objectified.”

“In 2022 you’d have to be a bit of a neanderthal to think that wolf-whistling at a woman is appropriate or acceptable.”

What do you think? Do you agree with Glenda?
