Compared to 37 other developed countries, Ireland spends among the lowest amount of time teaching numeracy, reading and writing skills.
According to the Irish Examiner, although Ireland’s schools have increased the amount of time spent teaching primary and secondary level reading within the past five years, it seems we’re still lagging behind.
In 2011 a new initiative was devised, ensuring 12 percent of primary teaching time was spent on reading, writing and literature, but it hasn’t enabled us to catch up with our European counterparts.
In Ireland, children are required to attend 183 days of primary school and 167 days of secondary school.
However, this is not the case with most other countries throughout Europe, which see their students spend more time in secondary school rather than primary.
