Leaving Cert exams

It can be tricky enough for secondary school students to decide what Leaving Cert subjects they want to take.

The usuals like Maths and English are a must, but when it comes to choosing between Chemistry or Accounting for example it can be overwhelming.

Sometimes, the subjects that kids enjoy the most aren’t even an option so they have to choose one or two subjects that they struggle in or really dislike.

If your child is in secondary school and really likes computer technology or sports, then he or she could be in luck when it comes to choosing their Leaving Cert subjects.

The Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton has announced that a number of schools across Ireland will give students the opportunity to study two new Leaving Cert subjects from September onwards.

Forty schools will offer students Computer Science and sixty-four schools will provide Physical Education as exam subjects.

The schools will receive €450,000 between them in grants to support this new programme.

Speaking at the announcement, the Education Minister said:

“I am keen during my time as Minister to make sure that our education system keeps pace with our changing society and the evolving needs of our economy.”

“We know how important it is to be physically active and engage in sports, not only for our physical health but also as a means to encourage team building, develop confidence and for our mental health.”

“The introduction of Computer Science as a Leaving Certificate subject is part of our ambition to make Ireland a STEM leader among our European colleagues. “

From reading Bruton’s statement on the Department of Education and Skills website, it sure does sound like he and his colleagues are doing their best to promote healthier lifestyles for students, while giving them more choices when it comes to their final exams in school.
