Nursing student, Ciara Twomey, has temporarily lost the sight in one eye after a quad bike crash in Thailand.

The Bantry native was holidaying with two friends when the accident happened last week.

According to The Irish Times, the 22-year-old has undergone surgery and her family have now launched an urgent appeal to cover the costs of further treatment.

Ciara’s brother Nick spoke to 96FM and said that although his family hopes that Ciara will be able to travel to Ireland for her next operation, this is dependent on the money they can raise and if she will be able to travel.

Her mother and another brother have travelled to Thailand to be by her bedside with the Department of Foreign Affairs liaising with the Twomey family to provide consular care.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to fundraise for Ciara’s care with a message reading:

“Ciara is recovering from eye surgery and will need further reconstructive surgery. This is a difficult, expensive and challenging road ahead for Ciara. We urgently need to raise funds to assist in Ciara’s care, travel and recovery.

“Ciara is a beautiful kind young girl with her whole life ahead of her, she loved dearly by all and we are devastated that this has happened to our girl. Please if you can assist in any small way it would be greatly appreciated by us her family, and friends”.
