Today is a day of huge celebration in this country. A day when the people of Ireland spoke up for our fellow citizens, our friends, our mothers, our fathers, our brothers, our sisters, our sons and our daughters and said “We are all equal”.
It was a resounding “YES”. YES to equality. YES to love. YES to making history. YES to celebrating ALL families and YES to roughly 4 per cent of our population who identify as LGBT.
This week this image went viral (thank you Damien Mulley) as supporters of equality made their last push to convince those The number are in and it seems the majority are ready to say goodbye to old Irish views and all the religious constraints that come with that.
The campaign for equality has won and in this fight, we have learned something about ourselves. We have learned that we are ready to fight for each other. We are a creative nation. We are ready to use our talents, our ingenuity, and our unity to fight for what’s right.
The NO campaign tried to make this campaign about the children of Ireland but in every way they missed the mark. They tried to argue that marriage equality was detrimental to their future. But the children of Ireland spoke up and answered back. They demanded that we do this for them. When Safia O’Gorman wrote her letter about her adored fathers, when Luke of YouthTubers pointed out: “Anybody should be able to love anybody else.” and when Jaelynne and Jordanne made a video simply stating: “Families are diverse, vote yes.” They asked us to give them an equal Ireland.
What a history day for Ireland, we’re too proud.
