As he is convicted of driving three times over the legal alcohol limit, Wayne Rooney has now spoken of his “unforgivable lack of judgement”.
The footballer pleaded guilty to charges presented to him in court on Monday – being handed down by the judge a two-year driving ban as well as 100 hours’ community service.
In a statement issued after his plea he furthermore apologised for “letting his family down”.
His wife of nine years – currently pregnant with their fourth child – was not present in court but Wayne was wearing his wedding ring.

The statement in full, which the 31-year-old athlete also tweeted to his millions of followers on Twitter, read: “Following today’s court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit.
“It was completely wrong.
“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.
“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”
Mrs Rooney had to return home from a holiday in Spain when she was told of Wayne’s arrest on September 1; he spent 12 hours in a police cell in the aftermath.
The couple has three young sons: Kai, aged seven, Klay, four, and Kit, 18 months. They have been together for 15 years and married for nine and the family lives in a €6.5million home in Cheshire.
She was initially staying at her parents’ house and had removed her wedding and engagement rings.
