Johnny Depp is suing his Amber Heard for $50 million for writing an article on abuse

Well, this is a turn of events.

Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, for $50 million. He is suing for defamation after Amber wrote a piece about abuse in the Washington Post late last year.

In the op-ed Amber penned, she said that women speaking out about domestic violence need to be given more support, both from institutions and from individuals.

“I write this as a woman who had to change my phone number weekly because I was getting death threats,” she wrote.

“For months, I rarely left my apartment, and when I did, I was pursued by camera drones and photographers on foot, on motorcycles and in cars.”

While she didn’t mention Johnny by name, his legal team claims that the article’s implication was that the actor “perpetrated domestic violence against her,” in which he “categorically” denies.

In court documents obtained by The Blast, Depp’s legal team wrote: “Ms. Heard purported to write from the perspective of ‘a public figure representing domestic abuse’ and claimed that she ‘felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out’ when she ‘spoke up against sexual violence’.

“Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. They were an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career.”

Meanwhile, Amber’s attorney said in a statement to People: “This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced.”
