They were given the warnings, but they didn’t heed them.
Dozens of Irish motorists were caught speeding within only a couple of hours of the commencement of
National Slow Down day on Friday morning.
An Garda Síochána had this week served notice of an intensive national speed enforcement operation for a 24-hour period this Friday and Saturday on what has become an annual event to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on Irish roads.
On Thursday,
Gardaí identified some of the locations they would be pulling for speeding and on Friday morning, as of approximately 9.30am, they released an update to reveal that 11,000 vehicles had been checked and that 56 had been detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
Some of the more notable occurrences spotted by Gardaí and GoSafe vehicles included:
- 100 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R418 at Youngstown, Athy, Kildare
- 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R463 at Gortatogher, Ardnacrusha, Clare
- 94 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N25 at Raheen, New Ross, Kilkenny
- 121 in a 100 km/h zone on the N15 at Mount Temple, Grange, Sligo
Later in the morning, they picked up a vehicle travelling over 50 km/h in excess of the speed limit on the M1 motorway near Dundalk.

The Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána have issued radio adverts reminding drivers to slow down and are urging fleet managers, haulage companies and organisations of all types to support the campaign with all their staff.
