“Kids just like creativity and imagination and that essentially comes for free”

Louise Thompson has shared one of the most valuable lessons she’s learned as a parent: when it comes to gift-giving, simplicity often brings the greatest joy.

The mum-of-one highlighted the power of affordable, creative gifts, showing how they can bring children just as much joy—if not more—than expensive presents.

Taking to her TikTok account, Louise shared a heartwarming moment from her son Leo’s third birthday. In the clip, Leo is seen excitedly playing with a £10 (approx. €12) DIY cardboard train which can be decorated with colours.

“One of the things I’ve learned since becoming a parent is that children do not need expensive toys,” Louise explained. She added that this belief inspired her decision to choose a budget-friendly yet meaningful present for her son.

“It was the best thing ever,” she added. “Kids love creativity and imagination, and that essentially comes for free.”

The former reality star’s message has resonated with parents on social media, offering a refreshing reminder about the innate joy children find in simple play.

@louisethompson I spent £10 on my son’s birthday present and it was his favourite present yet! You do not need to spend lots of money in order to ‘buy’ a child’s happiness. Kids just want your time and creativity. Remember time is the best gift you can offer. It’s the most expensive commodity. “Most of the valuable learning expenses from children come from open-ended play where they can use simple items in creative ways and we all know that kids just like opening boxes.

“It’s the most important and fun part of any present anyway.”

“Yes to this!”

Many parents praised her for promoting modest gifting and alleviating the pressure to match the lavish displays often seen on social media.

Many parents have praised Louise for using her platform and position to promote modest gifting and removing pressure from parents to keep up with lavish spending often seen on social media.

“Yes to this! Sick of seeing piles of expensive presents for 1 year olds on my social media,” one user wrote.

“What a brilliant gift,my grandchildren have far more fun with the box than the toy. We once spent a weekend making a full sized drawing of their grandad out of boxes,” another added.
