At the time, a representative for Banes said they were "heartsick" over her "tragic and senseless passing."
"She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends," they said.
"We were blessed to have had her in our lives.”
Banes played Rosamund Pike's mother in the 2014 blockbuster film Gone Girl, though she got her start in acting on the stage.
In 1981, she won a Theatre World award for her performance in the off-Broadway show Look Back in Anger. Three years later, she received a Drama Desk Award nomination for her role in Isn't It Romantic?
Banes also enjoyed a lengthy film and television career, with over 70 credits to her name.
The actress appeared in numerous TV shows including Star Trek, Desperate Housewives, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Murder She Wrote, NCIS and Once Upon a Time.
She married her partner, Kathryn Kranhold at an intimate ceremony in City Hall a few years ago.
