‘Best to avoid this’ Met Éireann bans one name from becoming a storm

The reason is a bit silly

Really?

We know that there comes a line for naming storms in Ireland. For example, Voldemort and TweedleDee have been banned before.

But the latest ban is just… silly.

So, the latest name that has been swiped off the storm list is… Nathan.

Yep, Nathan is no longer allowed become a storm, all because of the singer Nathan Carter.

Apparently, it would become too confusing if his name was used.

According to The Irish Examiner, in an email between Met Éireann and the Met Office, Ireland’s Chief Weather Forecaster at the time, Gerald Fleming, rejected the idea.

“We have a big C&W star in Ireland called Nathan Carter, so probably best to avoid this,” he said.

Storm Names Met Eireann

“Certain sections of our media seem unnaturally interested in how many names ‘we’ got as opposed to how many ‘they’ got in!

“I never encourage that line of thinking and just say that the list is agreed between us — which is no more than the truth!”

Let’s be honest – we’re not going to confuse a storm to an actual person so was there a need for this? Probably not.
