Mum Claims Toddler is ‘Seizure Free’ After Cannabis Treatment

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A Cork mother says her little boy is ’99 per cent seizure free’ after undergoing cannabis oil treatment for his severe epilepsy in the United States.

Yvonne Cahalane from Dunmanway, who moved to Colorado to access the treatment for her son Tristan in December, is now calling for marijuana to be legalised for medical use in Ireland.

Two-year-old Tristan, who has a rare condition called Dravet Syndrome, was suffering up to 20 uncontrollable, violent seizures a day when his desperate parents made the decision to try the pioneering CBD Oil and THCA therapy at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Yvonne’s husband John remains in Cork with the couple’s other son, Oscar. She told the Irish Mirror:

“I’ve missed so much of Oscar while daddy is missing Tristan’s development and progression, which he can only see through Skype.

“But the hospital and doctors we have caring for Tristan are wonderful, they hold cannabis in high regard as a medicine.

“Colorado in general is a very open-minded and beautiful state. There are educational events all the time to spread awareness of people’s options in using cannabis as their medicine.”

Tristan will continue with his treatment until the family’s visa runs out, but Irish law prevents him from accessing it here in Ireland. A Change.org petition started by the couple has already gathered more than 4,000 signatures.

A recent Claire Byrne Show poll showed 79 per cent of Irish people support the legalisation of Medical Cannabis, compared to just 24 per cent in 1998.
