“The sultanas packed for your child today are unacceptable at kindy due to their high sugar content.”Above this, it also stated that their policy asks parents to provide healthy and nutritious snacks such as “fresh, dried or tinned/packaged fruit/vegetables…” Hmm… perhaps someone was slightly confused at 'kindy.' According to MamaMia, the girl's mum also packed her a healthy sandwich, a kiwi, an orange and two boiled eggs but clearly the sultanas were a step too far. Although sultanas are high in sugar, they are great for boosting energy and they help us to maintain our intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Australian dietician Kathryn Hawkins who caught wind of the story took to Facebook in a bid to stand up for mums. She wrote,
“You DO NOT have to feel one bit guilty for putting a box of sultanas in your child’s lunch and you DO NOT have to explain why. Most Australian mums are doing the very best they can in a country that does not support working mothers, does not offer hot school lunches as part of the course , demands that women have 10 balls in the air and don’t drop any, and has created a society of nosey know-it-alls when it comes to feeding our children—so PLEASE LEAVE THE SULTANAS ALONE!!” Have you ever been lunchbox shamed?
