Though most people smile politely when a colleague or friend tells them the name they have chosen for their child regardless whether they like it or not, one Australian woman’s reaction was so bad HR had to get involved.
The woman took to Reddit to explain her outburst when her colleague brought her newborn twins into work and revealed the names she’d picked out for the pair.
She explained that the lady in question had welcomed the boys after struggling with fertility issues and that whilst she was delighted for her colleague she couldn’t help but question the names.
She said: “She has made her first appearance in the office with her new babies to introduce them to our team. When asked what she had named the boys (as up until this appearance she was undecided) she told me that she was naming them 'Sean'.
“When I asked about the other baby, she said 'no, they are both Sean, one with an 'A' and one with an 'E' so Sean and Seen. This co-worker's last name is also 'Sean'. When I pointed this out she said 'yes, like Tom Tom or Jay Jay'.”
Without thinking, the Reddit user told the woman: “That is the most idiotic thing I've heard and it's going to be so confusing.”
They then began receiving messages off other co-workers criticising her reaction saying it wasn’t their place to comment on the babies names.
However, in an update they shared how her colleagues husband had seen the Reddit post and decided to change the names before it was too late.
The original poster said: “They had a good chuckle and ended up agreeing with the replies the naming process wasn't ideal, and maybe the overwhelming process of having two newborns left them too tired to think straight.”
Despite already sending off the paperwork to the birth, deaths and marriages office, they called up the Brisbane office and managed to prevent the paperwork being processed giving them time to make changes to one of the names.
“They have withdrawn the paperwork (for Seen only) and will think of a new name, but they are keeping Sean Sean as they like it. I have also been reported to HR for making this Reddit post (not by the parents, they think it's hilarious) so well, if it isn't the consequences of my actions.”
The poster then gave an additional update on how the meeting with HR went, describing it as ‘underwhelming’ saying the company asked them to be “more considerate of co-workers feelings” and not to “put this meeting all over the internet”.
Commenters mostly agreed with the original poster saying it was better for the mum to have the “rude awakening” now rather than when it was too late.
Meanwhile another user shared: “My friend literally named her kid Beetle. So yeah. People are dumb.”
