New Irish “Lego” wins US toy award

Trine Jensen-Burke

Move over, Playmobil. See you later, Lego. Turns out the latest building craze we ought to get our kiddies into (riiight in time for the Christmas present season) is miniature architecture.

Arckit, an innovative modelling kit developed by Irish architect Damien Murtagh, has been dubbed “the new Lego” or “Reality Minecraft” by fans. Surprisingly, the kit, originally developed to offer Murtagh’s clients physical models rather than 3D computer drawings, just won a major US toy award  – which might prove a bit of a goldmine to Murtagh, considering the season that is fast approaching.

Based on modern building techniques, Arckit – which is already stocked by some major US toy shops, uses interconnecting bits that allow users to create a vast range of structures. In other words, it turns your kids into mini-architects and lets them design and build their very own dream house.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised by the Parents’ Choice Awards, and to win a gold medal is the icing on the cake”, Murtagh told the Irish Times.

“Arckit has been really well received by children here [in London] and in the US. It’s a more sophisticated modelling system than others on the market and the modular components mean users can be as creative as they want. The design possibilities are endless. One day you could be creating a basic structure, the next a complex home.”

Arckit is for sale in a number of retailers and on their website from €59.99.
