The bitter row over the location of the new National Maternity Hospital has ended, with Simon Harris announcing that the final choice for the new development is the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital.

In an event described by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny as “truly memorable and historic”, the deal will see the National Maternity Hospital move from Holles street to the St Vincent’s Hospital campus by 2021, with the planning application for the €150m redevelopment due to be lodged in January.

In a statement, the Department of Health said the new maternity, gynaecology, obstetrics and neonatal services would ensure that generations of mums-to-be “receive their care in an environment where their need for dignity and privacy is respected.”

Commenting on the agreement, Minister for Health, Simon Harris said he asked both hospitals to be “flexible and innovative”.

“It is clear that both hospitals listened and – motivated by the desire to provide women and infants with the best possible sustainable service on the Elm Park Campus – have through this agreement, demonstrated real leadership.” he said.
