Fitbit urge Irish customers to stop using product over burn fears

A number of consumers reported experiencing burns from the product.

Irish consumers who own a Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch have been urged to stop using the product as the company has issued a product recall.

The recall was issued after 100 users of the watch reported burns. A handful of those affected experienced second or third-degree burns.

In a statement, the company said: “Fitbit, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic smartwatches, which the company introduced in 2017 and stopped producing in 2020. The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard.”

They continued: “The health and safety of Fitbit users is our highest priority. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution for our users. We will offer a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.”

The recall only affects the Ionic model. These products have the model number FB503 on the back of the watch. Other Fitbit products are not subject to a recall.

Approximately 1 million Ionic watches were sold in the US, and about 693,000 were sold outside of the US.

Fitbit stopped producing the Ionic watch, which was manufactured in Taiwan, in 2020. It was sold in Ireland between 2017 and 2021.

The Fitbit Ionic came in four different models – the Ionic FB503CPBU in slate blue and burnt orange; the Ionic FB503GYBK in charcoal and smoke grey; the Ionic FB503WTGY in blue grey and silver grey and the Ionic FB503WTNV (Adidas edition) in ink blue and silver grey.

The company are offering a refund of $299 for the product. Affected customers are being advised to stop using the product and to dispose of it safely.
