Would you welcome something like this in Ireland?

Whether you’ve ever been annoyed by loud children while eating out or have struggled to keep your own unruly mob under control during a family meal, you’ll know kids and restaurants don’t always mix.

Now one eatery in Germany has taken an extreme step to ensure that customers can enjoy their food in peace and quiet.

Oma’s Küche, which translates as “Granny’s Kitchen” has banned children in the evenings.

Under-14s will no longer be welcome after 5pm at the restaurant, which is on the German island of Rugen.

“We have been thinking about this for a very long time,” its owner Rudolf Markl told DW.

“We have somehow reached that point where you say; ‘This just can’t go on like this’.”

He explained that he’d become fed up with rowdy kids pulling at tablecloths and spilling drinks.

The breaking point, he said, came when some children caused serious damage in the restaurant and broke an antique photo stand.

Mr Markl insists that the ban is not aimed at children but instead at parents “who cannot control their children.”

They “acknowledge it with a smile, keep on eating, and don’t care at all,” he said.

He hopes that by making Oma’s Küche a child-free zone after 5pm, he’ll create an “oasis of peace” in his establishment.
