Retailer Boots has banned the sale of energy drinks to children

Boots Ireland has announced that it has banned the sale of energy drinks, which contain caffeine, to children.

The retailer has followed other stores, like Aldi, to become the first non-food retailer to join an important initiative to restrict the sale of energy drinks, containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre, to children under the age of 16.

While all high-caffeine energy drinks carry a label stating they are not suitable for children, in line with industry guidelines, they still get sold to children under the age of 16 every day.

In a bid to stop this from happening, Boots has actively limited their sale to any below the required age. From today, it has implemented a till bar system, where anyone thought to be under the age of 16 will be asked to prove their age.

A Boots spokesperson said:

“Helping our customers to live healthier lives has always been our core purpose. We have listened to the growing public concern about young people consuming these high sugar, highly-caffeinated drinks.

We are doing the right thing in our stores in Ireland to help further restrict their access.”
