A schoolgirl has died and six other children and two adults were injured after a vehicle crashed into a school in London on Wednesday.

Police were called to The Study Preparatory School on Camp Road just before 10am after a Land Rover collided with one of the southwest London school’s buildings.

The Met said: “We can now confirm that sadly a child has died following an incident where a car collided with a building at a school in Wimbledon.”

Detective chief superintendent Clair Kelland said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

“We can also confirm that the driver of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.”

Kelland added that a woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The Wimbledon MP, Stephen Hammond, told the BBC several of those injured were in critical condition.

“Extraordinarily distressing and tragic incident on the last day of term … there has actually been a major incident declared,” he said.

“There are a number of casualties and injuries as we know. I understand, and I don’t know the numbers, but I understand a number of those are being treated as critical.”

It is believed the Land Rover crashed into a building being used for children aged between four and eight years old.

The school is for girls aged 4 to 11 and is located near Wimbledon Common.

London Ambulance Service says it has also sent a number of emergency responders and the fire service is also at the scene.

Merton Police earlier wrote on Twitter: “Officers are responding to an incident at a primary school in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

“We were called at 09:54hrs to reports that a car collided with a building at the school.

“Several people are being treated at the scene. We will share further updates when we can.”

The London Fire Brigade said it is “supporting emergency services at an incident at a school in Wimbledon”.
