Parents are understandably concerned about the current school closures.

But luckily, Minister Norma Foley has issued a new update.

She told Morning Ireland that schools have been closed to protect students and staff.

Many parents are worried that the closures will extend beyond today, December 7th, but this isn’t likely.

Minister Foley believes schools can safely re-open again once the warnings are lifted.

She reassured parents that schools are not likely to close for more than a day.

She said the Department of Education expects them to re-open on December 8th.

However, Minister Foley added that the situation will be monitored throughout the day.

Minister Foley added that online learning won’t be required today.

We’re sure pupils will be delighted to have a day off, but we can’t say the same for parents.

The Department of Education stated that schools in counties with a red alert or orange weather warning should close.

“Due to the significant nature of Storm Barra, as forecast by Met Éireann and to give sufficient notice to schools and parents/guardians, the Department is advising that all schools covered by the Red Alert and Orange warning from Met Éireann should not open tomorrow, 7 December.

You can keep up-to-date with the current weather warnings on all national and local news bulletins.

People living in red alert areas have been urged to remain inside. They have been told not to travel or leave their homes unless it is completely necessary.

Stay safe out there, everyone!
