Sugar Levels in Certain Coffee Shop Drinks Are “Dangerously” High

HerFamily

A study has revealed the amount of sugar contained in certain high street coffee shop drinks and you may find the results surprising.

According to reports, UK charity Action on Sugar has said that some sugar levels in certain drinks are “dangerously” high.

They looked at 131 flavoured hot drinks from popular chains, a third of which contained the same amount of or more sugar than Coca Cola (that’s nine teaspoons of sugar).

If you think that’s bad, Starbucks’ venti Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon Hot Mulled Fruit was found to have the highest sugar content with 25 teaspoons.

Speaking about the findings, which also include beverages from Costa and KFC, Professor Graham MacGregor, chair of Action on Sugar, said: “This is yet again another example of scandalous amount of sugar added to our food and drink.”

A spokesperson for Starbucks told The Telegraph: “Earlier this year we committed to reduce added sugar in our indulgent drinks by 25 per cent by the end of 2020.

“We also offer a wide variety of lighter options, sugar-free syrups and sugar-free natural sweetener and we display all nutritional information in-store and online.”
