Katie Mythen-Lynch

A barrister who was involved the Lindt Café siege in Sydney last year has named her newborn daughter after the friend who lost her life trying to protect her.

Julie Traynor and Katrina Dawson, who was also a barrister, were enjoying a hot chocolate together on December 15th, 2014 when lone gunman, Man Haron Monis held ten customers and eight employees hostage.

Katrina was killed by a police bullet ricochet as she tried to protect her pregnant friend from gunfire.

Julie, who gave birth two weeks ago having been 19 weeks pregnant during the siege, has named her little girl Emily Katrina in her friend’s memory.

Speaking after the tragedy, she described Dawson as “the most wonderful person I have ever met.

“She was my closest friend, a role model and confidant.” she said.”Her bravery and strength was, and continues to be, a comfort and inspiration for me. She invested every moment of her life in her friends and family, and will be greatly missed by everyone who has known her.”
