The Morning After Pill Is Now Available For Free To Irish Medical Card Holders

Sharyn Hayden

If you are a medical card holder, you will be pleased to hear that emergency contraception is far more accessible to you.

In ‘Old Ireland’, the only way a medical card holder could get the morning after pill was with a prescription from their GP or to pay for it outright at the chemist.

Now, your local pharmacist will be reimbursed by the State for providing medical card holders with emergency contraception for free.

The move is a result of a campaign presented to Minister Leo Varadkar at last year’s Irish Pharmacy Union conference.

I love this because it just moves us a little further in the right direction for women’s reproductive rights in Ireland.

From past experience, I can say that the humiliation and personal scrutiny that Irish women have had to undergo in order to access emergency contraception is nothing short of criminal!

It also reminds me of this lady, who is trying to pass a bill in South Carolina that would make it just as ridiculously difficult for men to access viagra as it is for women to access abortions.

You know, just to make a point (love her).
