The word you should use to end an argument with your partner

Cathy Donohue

You definitely haven’t heard this one before.

We’ve heard plenty of relationship advice in recent times, with dating experts and love gurus there to offer their theories on how to proceed when it comes to matters of the heart.

However, the latest tip is a bit of a random one and for that very reason, we’re intrigued as to how well it actually works.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, family therapist Hal Runkel says there’s one four-letter word that can be used to diffuse tension in a sticky situation.

‘Ouch’.

Yep, the word usually used when you feel a sudden pain or ache…step on a plug (the WORST), bang your funny bone awkwardly, bite your tongue etc, is also a handy one to have on hand when things get awkward with your significant other.

According to Hal, the author of Choose Your Own Adulthood, ‘ouch’ is a way of letting the other person know that their comments are hurting and that instead of slinging insults at each other, it’s time to talk and attempt a reconciliation.

By admitting that it hurts, you’re opening yourself up to your partner and how they respond can tell a lot about the state of your relationship and how you respond to each other’s grievances.

You can read Hal’s point of view in full here but try it next time an argument is in full swing, it might actually surprise you.
