Families are to be faced with yet another household bill from July, after Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly approved plans to charge households for recycling.
The new plan will see an extra green bin charge per kilo of paper and plastics added on to each householder’s rubbish collection bill.
According to figures published in the Sunday Business Post, the costs will be at 11 per cent per lift for general waste, 6 per cent for brown bins and green bins at 2 per cent.
While there is no doubt recycling is working (rubbish generated per person each year has fallen 30 per cent from 800kg in 2007 to 570kg in 2012), the extra bill is likely to dismay struggling families.
The news caused outrage online, with householders taking to Twitter to voice their distaste at the plan.
