So we knew she wasn’t exactly going to be hiring a doula or participating in the Domino scheme, but the sheer number of medical experts who were on hand in Kate Middleton’s delivery room is quite impressive.

The Duchess of Cambridge had no less than 23 doctors and midwives on call for the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, ever one of them ready to hot foot it to the hospital whenever the time came.

The size of the support team was revealed this week when the Duke and Duchess invited many of the people who were present at the births of their cildren, including Professor Tiong Ghee Teoh, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, and consultant anaesthetist Dr Johanna Bray, to a Buckingham Palace garden party.

Professor Teoh revealed that he was a member of the ‘back up’ team, a group of leading experts who were on call for three months before Kate’s due date.

The team included:

  • Obstetricians: two
  • Paediatricians: one
  • Midwives: three
  • Anaesthetists: four
  • Theatre staff: two
  • Special care baby unit staff: four
  • Lab technician: one
  • Hospital managers: four

Professor Teoh said: ‘We had a huge team. Anything that could possibly go wrong we had a team of people behind each speciality. Everyone was sworn to secrecy.’

‘She was a fit young woman, that’s the most important thing. At the end of the day you want to deliver a healthy, happy baby to a a healthy happy mother – and that’s what happened.’

Both Kate and William’s royal babies were born at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s hospital in Paddington, London. Both William and Prince Harry were also born at the hospital, with Kate making a public appearance on the steps as she left after both births, just as Princess Diana did in June of 1982 as she left with William and later once again with Harry.
