This is the 8th swimming-related death in Ireland over the past week.
A 14-year-old has passed away after a swimming accident in Monaghan.
It is believed the teenager got into difficulty when he was swimming in Hollywood lake in Monaghan.
He was pulled from the lake and airlifted to Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
Despite the doctor’s best efforts, the young boy tragically died at the hospital on Monday.
“A male youth (14) taken from the scene by Air Ambulance was pronounced dead in Temple Street Hospital on Monday 26/7/2021.
“Gardaí are treating the matter as a tragic accident at this time. A file will now be prepared for the Coroner,” Gardaí stated.
This is the eighth swimming-related death in the past week.
A man in his 60s passed away in Tramore over the weekend. He was rushed to the hospital after getting into difficulty in the water but passed away a short time later.
Over the weekend, mum-of-two Natasha Core was laid to rest. The young mum died trying to save her son who got into difficulty when swimming in Swan Lake, Cavan.
The mum was remembered as a hero and loving mother who would have done anything for her two boys.
Irish Water Safety has urged the public to be extra cautious if swimming in the sea or in lakes this summer. They explained that a lot of people aren’t used to swimming after being in lockdown and they may overestimate their abilities.
