Abandoned Baby Allanah to be Laid to Rest Today

Katie Mythen-Lynch

The baby girl whose body was found by workers at a recycling factory will be laid to rest today.

Gardaí, who named the child Alannah, meaning ‘precious’ or ‘dear child’, are expected to attend the ceremony, which will be led by Fr Enda Lloyd of Bray’s Holy Redeemer Church and Rev Alan Breen of St Patrick’s Church in Greystones in Redford cemetery, Greystones at noon.

The infant’s coffin and headstone have been paid for by Wicklow County Council and the Greenstar recycling company, after the remains were discovered at their facility in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Despite numerous public appeals for the child’s mother to come forward and seek medical help, no contact has been made.

An autopsy revealed that the infant was born weeks earlier than originally thought. Detectives have now widened the net for clues as to the baby girl’s identity.

Officers are now working with Greenstar to figure out where each load of recycling and waste that was deposited at the Fassaroe centre came from.

Speaking at a press conference, Superintendent Pat Ward, who is leading the investigation said:

“We don’t know what exactly happened leading up to the birth of the baby. However, it is possible that the baby was still born and if this is the case my priority now is to get all medical assistance and support to the baby’s mum.

“I am very concerned for the welfare of the mum of this baby as she is possibly in a distressed state and in need of medical assistance.”

Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, has set up a dedicated support helpline manned by experienced staff on 076 6958400.
