“They showed up at our dinner table and I just said ‘all of you guys leave, now'"
Picture the scene; The wedding is over and you've set off together on your dream honeymoon. There's nothing to be seen for miles around except golden sand, blue skies... oh and the bride’s entire family.
The groom in this equation recently took to
Reddit to vent about his in-laws' 'surprise'.
“My wife's family, parents, sisters and their spouses, ‘surprised us’ by showing up at our hotel and booking rooms on the same floor.”
Shocked and upset at their decision, he lashed out at his in-laws: “They showed up at our dinner table and I just said ‘all of you guys leave, now, get the f--- out of here you're not joining us.' They were confused, so I told them again and so they did.”
Eek.
But they weren’t gone for long. Later, they attempted to join the couple while they were lying on the beach. Again, the newly-married man lost his cool: “After five minutes I told them, 'it's our honeymoon, just for me and my wife, not you guys. Now respect the fact we want to be alone’.
“Maybe they left early or took a hint. We didn't see them again.”
The honeymoon is long-since over, but things have never really ironed themselves out with the family, as he describes: "It left a serious strain and we still are having issues today from it.”
Some people in the comments section didn't blame the man for losing his cool.
“Who shows up uninvited to someone’s honeymoon? That’s ridiculous."
"Yup, you were rude but what were they thinking? Were they even thinking?"
"The in-laws were at fault here. Appalling."
Other people thought his reaction was too harsh.
"You don’t go to a honeymoon unannounced. I know couples who went with their best friends or families but that was planned like that. But you also don’t start insulting them. You went from 0 to 100, ignored them and are now wondering why you have a strained relationship? You overreacted massively."
One commenter had this sage advice to offer:
"You probably could have handled the exchange better. But who the f--- shows up as a surprise on a honeymoon? You should have just started having sex right in front of them, honestly."
Honestly, group holidays are so much fun I kinda like the sound of this. But I guess that very much depends how you get on with your in-laws!
