Should child-free weddings extend to babies?

Niamh Ryan

A clip from the Mum Club Podcast recently went viral for their discussion about child-free weddings

The two clashed over their views on child-free weddings, with one one having the strong opinion that babies shouldn’t be allowed come to child-free weddings.

It sounds like an obvious statement, but the other host heavily disagreed. In her opinion, you can’t ask a guest with a newborn baby to leave it at home for the day.

Leah Goulis explained what had happened at her own wedding that led her to the decision:

“I had a child-free wedding, and then there was this one person that was adamant that they were going to bring their kid.”

While the baby was only four months old, she didn’t think it would be fair on the other parents.

However, her co-host Emily Blatchford, said she would never dream of telling one of her friends to leave their newborn at home.

The comments were heavily divided over the topic.

One user said: “I went to a wedding last week and it was meant to be child free. A woman brought her newborn and it cried all the way through the vows and was eventually asked to leave by the maid of honour.”

Another said: “A baby is the most child version of a child, of course it applies to them.”

The majority of commenters seemed to view the parents in these situations as entitled. Many asked why they couldn’t just agree to what the bride asked for.

Some also pointed out that it’s in the parents’ best interest to leave the child at home:

“Is a wedding even a good environment for a newborn to be around? Loud music, alcohol, smoking, drunk adults, etc?”

What do you think, should parents with young children be given an exception?
