Weather expert reveals chance of a white Christmas in Ireland this year

Met Éireann’s verdict on the chances a white Christmas has been revealed.

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

Well, Met Éireann have revealed whether or not we may see snowfall this year.

People have just been recovering from Storm Darragh, which left over 350,000 homes without power last Friday, but now things are set to take an icy turn.

Despite the fall in temperatures, weather maps are indicating that high pressure won’t be going anywhere with dry weather confirmed for the lead-up to Christmas.

A spokesperson for Met Éireann stated: “A reasonably robust signal emerges with high pressure likely to be centred just to the southwest of Ireland.

“Temperatures are predicted to be slightly above normal overall although, with high pressure, there is a possibility of colder/frostier nights and lingering mist and fog during the days,” they added.

“Anticyclonic gloom – generally cloudy conditions – might also be a feature though. The orientation of the high pressure is such that a northwesterly or variable airflow might dominate which would mean greater amounts of precipitation in the northwest,” they continued.

They explained that therefore ‘wintery showers’ around the big day of December 25 can’t be ruled out.

Things are set to remain quite unpleasant this weekend with expected highs of just four to eight degrees in light variable breezes.
