A serious collision took place in the early hours this morning on the R363 Brideswell to Athlone Road in Roscommon.
A 23-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of one of the cars involved, has been taken to Tullamore Hospital where his condition has been described as serious.
The accident happened at about 4 am this morning approximately a mile from Brideswell.
A family of two adults and two children were in the other vehicle. The family is being treated in Portiuncla Hospital, Ballinasloe though their condition is unknown at this point. The children are aged just two and six years old.
The road is currently closed for examination of the scene; diversions are in place.
