Two teenage girls have sadly been killed following a road crash in Co Monaghan.
The incident, which also saw three others injured, occurred on the N54 at Legnakelly near Clones at around 6.45pm yesterday.
The girls were aged 16 and 17 and were travelling as passengers in the car.
Their bodies have since been taken to Monaghan General Hospital where post-mortem examination will be carried out.
An 18 year old woman has been left in a critical condition and is currently receiving treatment at Cavan General Hospital, while a man, also 18, is receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries at Cavan General Hospital.
The 60 year old driver of the car is also in critical condition and is being treated at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
It is believed that all five people were travelling in the same car.
It is also understood that some of those in the car were on their way to a Debs for a local school when the accident happened.
Emergency services and two units from the fire service were called to the scene on the Clones to Smithborough Road.
The N54 was closed while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a technical examination, with the road remaining closed overnight.
Gardaí are now appealing to those who may have witnessed the incident and are asking them to get in contact.
Speaking in a social media post, TD for the Cavan-Monaghan constituency Minister Heather Humphreys said the tragedy was “heartbreaking news for our local community in the Clones area”.
“Every family’s worst nightmare. My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.”
