A two-year-old boy in his buggy has been burnt in an acid attack, which also left his parents with significant injuries.

A Chinese family were the victims of a horrific acid attack on a London street at lunchtime on Saturday. The young boy’s parents were pushing him in his buggy when acid was thrown at them, The Mirror reports.

A woman who witnessed the family being attacked rushed into a nearby shop to buy water to assist the victims. Shop owner Murat Kayran, told the newspaper that members of the public attempted to help the trio,

“They were a Chinese family, a woman frantically ran in here when it happened and said ‘there’s been an acid attack’.

She bought one bottle at first and then after that bought three more bottles of 1.5l water. Then a gentleman came in and bought another three.

About five minutes later and ambulance and police cars turned up, as well as the fire brigade. It’s such a scary thing to happen.”

Scotland Yard said that they are appealing for witnesses following the incident:

“Police in north London are appealing for witnesses and information following an acid attack on a family in Islington.

On Saturday, 8 April police were called by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) shortly after 1.05pm to reports of an assault in Copenhagen Street junction with Caledonian Road. Officers attended along with the LAS and London Fire Brigade.

The victims, a 40-year-old father, a 36-year-old mother and their two-year-old boy – were found with injuries consistent with a noxious substance, believed to be an acid, being thrown at them.

They were initially taken to a north London hospital, and were subsequently transferred to another hospital. The man’s injuries, whilst not believed to be life threatening, are being treated as life-changing. The woman and child suffered minor injuries and have since been discharged.

Detectives from Central North Borough Command Unit CID are investigating. Enquiries to establish the full circumstances the incident, and ascertain what the substance is, are ongoing.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said that the two-year-old boy had suffered slight burns to his face, while his parents suffered 15% burns to their hands and torsos. The substance had a PH reading of one – or ‘ultra acidic’,

“One adult male and one adult female each had 15% chemical burns to their hands and torso. One infant had slight chemical burns to their face. All came in contact with unknown liquid with a PH reading of one.

Tests confirmed a strong acidic and oxidising substance.”

No one has yet been arrested in relation to the incident.
