A very unique Irish name made an unexpected appearance in a Netflix comedy series.
Black comedy thriller Bodkin follows American podcast host Gilbert Power as he travels to the fictional Irish coastal town of Bodkin to investigate a long-cold mystery: the disappearance of three people during a Samhain celebration.
He is joined by Irish investigative journalist Dove Maloney and ambitious newcomer Emmy Sizergh, and together the trio set out to unravel the truth behind the disappearances.
While 'Dove' is a cute nickname, Dove Maloney’s real name is actually Dubheasa.
This rare Irish name, pronounced “dov-ess-a,” has only appeared on Ireland’s most popular baby names list three times since 1964, and even then it ranked very low: 876th in 2014, 896th in 2018, and 883rd in 2021.
Names only appear on the list when three people with the same name are born, meaning that in 2014, 2018 and 2021 there were three Dubheasas born.
While those three Dubheasas may be starting primary and secondary school now, they may be an exception, as none have made the list since.
The show however, has received positive reviews from critics when it premiered on Netflix in 2024.
