WATCH: Little girl connects with grandmother in moving video

Sophie White

5-year-old Sophie Flynn from Co. Offaly met her 82-year-old grandmother, Brenda, for the first time this week and the video of the encounter is touching thousands.

Brenda is blind and also suffers from dementia, her daughter Sarah (Sophie’s mother) was incredibly moved by the instant connection between her mother and daughter. Brenda’s reaction to her granddaughter’s singing felt like a miracle to the rest of the family.

“Sophie just jumped straight into bed with Nana and started chatting to her and singing to her and stroking her face. Sophie brought her back to life. It was amazing, we just couldn’t believe it. When they were together it was like they were the only two people in the room,” she told The Mirror.

The video is fast becoming a viral sensation and has been viewed more than 100,000 times on Facebook.

Often families of those who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s can lose hope that their loved ones have any connection to the world around them as the disease progresses. This video is touching so many because it shows that love, at least sometimes, can transcend illness.
