Woman arrested under suspicion of selling 7-year-old son

A woman in the US has been arrested on suspicion of selling her child.

Police believe that she had sold her seven-year-old son and that she was in the process of selling two more of her children.

The woman, 28-year-old Esmerelda Garza, was arrested on Friday in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police were searching a property using a drug warrant when they came across the boy.

Ms Garza was charged with selling or purchasing a child and remains in police custody, reports ABC News.

They also found her two younger children, girls aged two and three, who they believe were about to be sold.

A man and woman were arrested in connection with the drug search and an investigation is ongoing.

The sale of children, though extremely rare, is not unheard of in the US in recent years.

The state of Mississippi only formally outlawed the practice in 2009.

The law was introduced after a woman in Yalobusha County in the state attempted to sell her granddaughter for $2,000 and a car in 2008.

The woman was arrested but couldn't be charged as Mississippi law didn't prevent the sale of a child, according to the Jackson Free Press.
